Crystalline

Electronic Based Systems in Europe

The mission of CRYSTALLINE (eleCtRonic-based sYSTems reseArch exceLLence IN Europe) hosted at the Silicon Austria Labs is to train early-stage researchers (ESRs) as future leaders in Electronic Based Systems (EBSs) research. Our program has been designed for a duration of 60 months, where the individual ESRs will be expected to finish their PhD within 48 months. During a total of 2 cohorts, we have recruited 18 ESR positions.

Motivation & Background

At Silicon Austria Labs (SAL), we are strongly committed to becoming a top European research centre for Electronic Based Systems. In our research we target EBSs ranging from electronic components, via devices drawing on micro- and nanoelectronics up to designs at the system or even system of systems level and where electronics and embedded software meet and form the technological backbone of digitalization. Living our mission of pursuing cutting edge research, we draw on a growing staff of well-established scientists and experts as well as talented ESRs in a multitude of relevant disciplines of science and engineering.

With the aim of facilitating a sustainable researcher network, SAL founded the SAL Doctoral College (SAL-DC) together with the universities Alpen-Adria-Universität (AAU) Klagenfurt, Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz and University of Technology (TU) Graz. Its mission is to recruit, train and educate ESRs for becoming the future leaders in Austrian and European EBS research in and outside of SAL. The SAL-DC unites SAL with its three sites in Graz, Linz, and Villach as beneficiary with the non-recruiting host universities TU Graz, JKU Linz and AAU Klagenfurt as well as a network of national and international partners from industry and academia who provide opportunities for networking, research visits and secondments.

With the CRYSTALLINE program co-funded by the MSCA-COFUND action, the SAL-DC will be able to further improve on its critical mass and its impact on EBS research at the highest level of scientific excellence. It will provide a boost in terms of brain-gain by attracting international talents to become part of the SAL network, where they can benefit from our SAL environment that unites academic excellence with industrial entrepreneurship. All candidates selected via CRYSTALLINE will become members of the SAL-DC.

This project has received funding from Horizon Europe’s Excellent Science programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND Action, grant agreement No: 101126571.
